Tips for scanning books

• Choose BOOK in the mode strip above the shutter. Turn the book sideways with its top towards the right of the phone, and line the spine up with the dashed guide.
• Hold the phone parallel to the book and fill the frame with both pages. Even daylight works better than a single lamp.
• Keep your fingers in the outer margins, away from the text. Then turn on Finger Removal (the hand button above the page, or Edit › Adjust) to clear them.
• Turn on Auto capture and simply turn the pages: the camera takes the next shot once the page is still.
• Choose which page comes first (left or right) with the page-order button on the camera screen.

Common questions

A page still looks curved.

Check that AI Enhancement (the wand button) is on for that page. Very steep curls near the spine flatten best when the book is pressed open a little more and the phone is directly above the spread.

The page edges were cropped wrongly.

Open the page, tap Edit › Recrop and drag the corners onto the page. Every edit re-renders from your original photo, so nothing is lost.

Finger Removal left a finger.

It clears fingers that reach in from the edge of the page into the blank margin. Where a finger covers text, that part is kept, because the words under it can't be recovered from the photo. Retaking the shot with the finger further out gives the best result.

How do I get the text out of a scan?

Export as a PDF with Searchable text on, or choose the Text format to save a .txt file or copy all the text.

Face ID doesn't recognise me and the app stays locked.

Your iPhone passcode always unlocks the app as well.
